Make a return plan before the detour
The Demo opening asks you to collect a compass for a reason: it gives a direction reference even when the scenery looks similar. A compass identifies north; it does not show the road’s position.
- Park where you can recognize the RV from the stop.
- Use the compass to note your outward direction and the opposite return direction.
- Check fuel and water before a longer vehicle detour.
- Keep the road, structure or RV visible as long as practical.

If you have already lost the road
A Steam player reported driving north for an hour after an off-road autosave without finding the road. That is evidence against treating north as a guaranteed recovery instruction; it does not prove the road can never be reached.
The same thread discusses remembering the sun’s earlier direction. That can support orientation if you actually observed it before the detour; the sun alone cannot reconstruct an unknown route.
- Stop adding distance while you still remember the last part of the route.
- Identify the last known road, stop or visible structure and reverse your recent travel if you can.
- Use the compass to keep that return direction consistent.
- If the route memory is gone, assess remaining fuel and water before continuing an open-ended search.
Do not use a fixed-map promise for a generated world
The official game description says new runs have different starting points and generated worlds. A coordinate copied from another run is therefore not a general navigation guide.
The Demo’s main road is your reliable connection between roadside stops. Side roads were announced for Early Access; do not let that future layout replace the return bearing you need in the Demo today.
Use ordinary stops to reset your bearings
- Before moving on, know which direction continues along the road.
- Check water, fuel and vehicle condition while already stopped.
- Keep the next walk or drive proportional to the supplies available.
- Return to the vehicle before searching a second distant object.
