Follow the signal and dig

The Demo changed chest interaction so buried locks cannot be used before the chest is fully uncovered. If the lock will not work, finish the digging step before assuming the key is wrong.

One Steam player solved an apparently broken common key by moving around the chest and looking directly at its lock. Check the aiming point before leaving a matching chest behind.

  1. Hold the detector while walking around a roadside location.
  2. Move toward the increasingly rapid beeps. A continuous signal indicates you are very close to the target in the reported Demo behavior.
  3. Mark the spot before returning for the shovel if you cannot carry both tools.
  4. Dig at the spot and keep digging until the chest is fully above ground.
  5. Hold the matching key, walk around to the lock, aim at the lock itself and use the interact action. Aiming at the lid can leave the key doing nothing.

Common and rare keys are not interchangeable

NPC Tips reports that the key is consumed when the lock opens. Save a key for a matching chest; a failed attempt with the wrong key is not evidence that the chest must be pried open.

The Demo analysis places rare chests and Rare Keys at bus stops. Check a bus stop when you pass it, but expect some stops to lack that pairing.

Where to search for the detector and shovel

The Demo tables include tool spawns at the starter house, factories, radio stations and container areas, with other stop types also possible. Search the items actually present in your world instead of relying on a fixed attic location from another seed.

A detector only following buried treasure may stop reacting after you expose a chest. That is expected in the reported Demo behavior: move to a new buried target rather than trying to recharge the old signal.

The two treasure objectives have different finish points

The Demo analysis does not require a rare chest to finish Find a treasure. If you only want the objective, a common chest and its key are the relevant pair.
